The doves we release are called Rock Doves,
otherwise known as white racing homing pigeons. They can navigate home using
the earth's magnetic fields. Much scientific research has been done on this
subject, and we now know that magnetite is found in the birds’ brains
and beaks to help them locate their global positions. Magnetite helps them
navigate home from many miles away. Throughout history, doves have been used
in wars to relay messages and, thus, have saved peoples’ lives. Pigeons
were carried on ships in convoys and in the event of a U-boat attack a messenger
pigeon was released with details of the location of the sinking ship. The first
biblical reference to the pigeon (or dove) is found in the Old Testament in
the story of Noah and the dove of peace. Today, doves are most often used in
the growing business of providing dove releases for special events.
